NewsCan Liquid Waste Be Disposed Of In An Eco-Friendly Way?

24 April 2020by support

Liquid waste can lead to ground and groundwater pollution as well as odour generation. Therefore, it is critical that it is not only disposed of correctly but also in an eco-friendly way.

This type of waste is harmful to humans, animals and agriculture, to name but a few. Liquid waste can be very toxic so it is super important that it doesn’t remain undisposed of.

However, liquid waste removal requires proper handling and proper protective gear and equipment.

In fact, all waste disposal and other environmental issues related to any industry, community, or government are strictly regulated by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA).

Important Waste Disposal Considerations

Before disposing of liquid waste in a safe manner, the following factors need to be considered:

  • Proximity to residential areas
  • Potential for surface, groundwater, and odour pollution
  • Disposal path – where will the discharge go? Discharge to waters, sewers, or land
  • Nature of liquid waste
  • Recycling potential
  • Potential for soil and crop assimilation
  • Available land area

Environmentally-Friendly Liquid Waste Disposal

Waste management has stepped up its game in the last couple of decades. Rightly so, because today, more than ever, we need to reduce the adverse effect of man-made waste on the environment, as well as human and animal health.

Here are some eco-friendly ways to dispose of liquid waste:

  1. Sedimentation – this is a method used to separate the liquid out of the solid waste. The solid waste is then sent to a landfill while the liquid that remains is removed of any contaminants or treated as needed. This method is used for non-hazardous liquid waste.
  2. Dewatering – this is another method used for disposal of non-hazardous liquid waste. Similar to sedimentation, the dewatering process removes water from solid waste by using centrifugation, filtration, and other solid-liquid separation processes.
  3. Composting – composting liquid waste is possible. This method separates water and organic liquid waste. The organic waste is then applied to the soil to enrich it with sodium, potassium, and nitrogen as natural fertilizers.
  4. Solidification – solidification can be an environmentally friendly process when you use natural, non-toxic materials like fly ash, lime dust, or sawdust. Turning liquid waste into solid makes liquid waste disposal very easy.
  5. Root Zone – liquid waste goes through a sedimentation tank and is filtered using multiple processes to purify the waste to make it safe enough to release into the sewage or waterways or to water treatment plants for recycling. This is usually used for liquid waste from bathrooms and kitchen drains.
  6. Others – There are other methods and processes that are safe for the environment. Consult your local government and authorities for recommendations.

As an individual, it is your responsibility to ensure that your waste especially liquid waste is being disposed of in a safe and environment-friendly way.

Make sure you use the correct disposal methods or hire the right company and make sure you choose an EPA licensed and certified company to handle your water waste.

Following are some of the ways you can help in disposing of liquid waste properly:

  • Locate all your pipes and drains. Know where they discharge to.
  • Check your drains regularly for leaks and damages.
  • Store liquid waste responsibly until it is collected.
  • Minimise liquid waste storage containers in your area. Have your waste collected on a regular basis.
  • Label your liquid waste containers properly.
  • Do not store liquid waste in containers that rusted, dented, or showing signs of deterioration.
  • Use sill containment systems on your containers to ensure or minimise the chances of spilling over or the containers tipping over.
  • In cases of spills, attend to the spill immediately and contact the proper authorities or professionals who can handle it.
  • Ensure that the company or team of professionals you hire are certified, licensed, and have a proven track record of environmental compliance.

Removal and disposal of liquid waste involve physical and chemical techniques, that is why it is crucial to hire professionals who have the experience, capacity, and concern for the environment.

The Environment Protection Act of 1993 requires proper disposal of water waste, following the SA Water requirements to avoid and minimise any environmental harm or pollution caused by liquid waste.
