What’s The Best Way To Clean Stormwater Drains?

Best Way Clean Stormwater Drains

Stormwater drains are not too hard to clean and maintain. You only need to do major drain cleaning twice a year and regular maintenance once a month. What is important is that you regularly check if they are working properly and they’re not clogged.

You have to make sure your stormwater drains are working to their full capacity at all times so when a storm hits, you do not get flooded. Flooding can cause structural damage that can cost you hundreds if not thousands of dollars in repairs. Prevention is definitely better than cure, in this instance.

What You Need

  • Rubber gloves
  • Flathead screwdriver (to pry up the storm drain cover)
  • Scrubbing brush
  • Toilet bowl cleaner
  • Detergent and other cleaning agents
  • Broom
  • A bucket full of water

Step 1. Clean the area by sweeping away dried leaves and other rubbish that is covering the drain cover and the surrounding areas. By simply keeping the area clean from debris, sand, stones, and rubbish, this alone can help to prevent the drain from getting clogged. Try to do this every day even when you are not purposely cleaning your stormwater drains.

Step 2. Put on your rubber gloves and use the flathead screwdriver to pry open the rainwater drain so you can see what is causing the blockage inside. Reach inside and take out whatever is causing the blockage. Make sure you place all rubbish and debris inside a bin and dispose of it properly.

Step 3. Scrub the drain using a detergent or toilet bowl cleaner. Make sure you remove any scum deposits and blockages. Scrub the inside of the stormwater drain including the sides, edges and go as far and your gloved hands can go. Keep the inside nice and clean so the water can freely flow when it rains.

Step 4. Rinse the cleaning agent off using the bucket of water. Rinse thoroughly to avoid the cleaning agent residue building up and causing any clogging in the future. Rinsing thoroughly will also help wash away anything you may have loosened up or scrubbed off into the sewer system.

Step 5. Put the stormwater drain cover back in place securely and you are done!

Signs Of A Blocked Or Clogged Stormwater Drain

  • Bad smell. This is the first sign of a clogged drain and the easiest to recognise. Stagnant wastewater causes a foul odour. Check your drains right away when you notice your drains starting to smell bad.
  • Slow sink drainage. When your drains are clogged, your sinks are slow to drain, sometimes they don’t drain at all if the blockage is severe.
  • Toilet drainage. Another obvious sign of blocked drains is flooded toilets.
  • Noise. If you notice gurgling sounds from the plughole, chances are you have a blocked water drain.

When you notice the first signs of blockage, check your stormwater drains right away and see if the issue can be remedied easily. If the case is worse than you expected, call your plumber and have it fixed immediately. Any delays can lead to flooding and other serious problems that can set you back hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
